Some bears are happy with a leisurely stroll or an afternoon nap. Mowgli, however, always has other plans. Whether he’s eagerly digging through soft, rain-soaked soil, climbing trees with ease, or figuring out how to tackle his latest enrichment, this energetic sloth bear is always looking for his next adventure.

At nine years old, Mowgli’s boundless enthusiasm has earned him a reputation among the team. Around the Agra Bear Rescue Facility, he’s affectionately known as an agent of destruction (!), not because he causes trouble, but because every enrichment device he sniffs out quickly becomes a target he must destroy and defeat. For Mowgli, his curiosity isn’t just a personality trait, it’s the way of his life.
From an Orphaned Cub to a Confident Bear
Mowgli’s journey began under heartbreaking circumstances. He was only around three months old when his mother tragically lost her life after coming into contact with a live electric wire set up by poachers. Alone and vulnerable, the young cub was rescued and brought to the Agra Bear Rescue Facility, where he received round-the-clock care from veterinarians and caregivers.

Growing up without his mother meant Mowgli needed constant attention during his early months. With dedicated hand-rearing, the tiny cub grew up well into the lively and confident bear he is today.
A Day Filled with Discovery
As the day kicks in and once breakfast is over, Mowgli rarely stays in one place for long. Being full of curiosity, exploring his surroundings is one of his favourite pastimes, and he spends much of his day roaming through his enclosure in search of something interesting.

During the rainy season, his adventurous side becomes even more apparent. The soft, damp soil encourages him to flaunt one of his natural behaviours: digging. As insectivores, sloth bears instinctively dig for insects hidden beneath the ground, and Mowgli can often be seen following his nose to find the right spots to enthusiastically turn over patches of loose earth. Climbing trees is another joy in his life, as he is often seen enjoying scaling them in his enclosure. He only stops when he gets to the perfect vantage point from where he can observe all that is happening around him.
A Puzzle Solver at Heart
If there’s one thing that truly captures Mowgli’s attention, it’s the vast variety of enrichments he has. The rotatable wooden puzzle feeder is the one he engages with most because he has to work hard to get to his edible rewards. Mowgli never gives up, and his excitement to solve the feeding puzzle seems to be his way of telling us ‘challenge accepted’!
Caregivers often joke that enrichments for Mowgli need to be extra sturdy because he’s determined to push every limit while investigating each, and ends up dismantling and demolishing the installations altogether! His curiosity means that every new object becomes a target to inspect, manipulate, and win over.

That same eagerness to “solve the problem” shines during his target training sessions as well. Mowgli is highly cooperative, but his caregiver has to remain one step ahead. The clever bear has ample excitement, is quick to respond, and is constantly inquisitive about what’s in store for him to eat after responding to every cue given to him — making these sessions super lively.
Playtime with Mandro
Although Mowgli never seems to get bored spending most of his time on his own, he shares his enclosure with fellow sloth bear Mandro. When the two meet and greet, Mowgli’s energy contagiously transfers to Mandro, making them playfully wrestle much like human brothers often do. Mock wrestling happens to be a common and natural behaviour in the bear world too!

After a spirited play session, Mowgli sets off to happily navigate the enclosure once again, investigating any and every intriguing scent.
Hearty Appetite for Sweet Treats
Mowgli’s caregiving team have noticed that his appetite increases closer to winter. It is a natural pattern often seen as bears build up their energy reserves for the colder months. Despite eating more, Mowgli’s remarkable energy never seems to fade. Instead, he simply spends more time digging, exploring, and making the most of every day!

Mowgli is well aware that honey abundantly spread over logs acts as a teaser for the treats that are hidden in his enrichments. And his craving for sweets doesn’t end here. The jolly bear is presented with multiple fruits, and we are certain that for Mowgli, watermelon slices will be the first he would munch into. Soon after, he is sure to tuck in the variety of fresh fruits offered to him. His diet is balanced with nutritious porridge meals, and caregivers make sure to add multivitamin supplements within it for his overall wellbeing.
A Bear Full of Life
Mowgli suffered from great trauma as a tiny cub, but found within him the strength to confront and overcome any obstacle. This mighty strength powers his energy to create better action scenes than what we watch in superhero movies! Every broken enrichment, every muddy patch he digs through, and every wrestling match with Mandro reflects the confidence and freedom Mowgli has been able to find at Wildlife SOS. Watching him embrace each day with endless vigour and curiosity is a joyful reminder of what compassionate care can achieve.
