Healing at Wildlife SOS does not always begin with medicine.

Gradually, familiar voices, consistent routines and numerous quiet warm moments make fear in rescued animals be replaced by trust and reassurance. One of the hardest steps in healing is perhaps learning to trust human beings, especially for our rescued sloth bears, most of whom have come to us from a traumatic past under captivity.
Veterinarians rely on this very trust to provide care. At Wildlife SOS rescue centres, our veterinarians and caregivers are blending care and compassion with cutting-edge science and technology to create a system where they are not just treating our sloth bears physically, but also helping them be at peace. They are revolutionising the way sloth bears are examined, diagnosed, and cared for, without fear, coercion, or needless stress, by fusing medical research with trust-based training.

The Unseen Injuries of a Difficult Past
Many of the sloth bears rescued by Wildlife SOS were once exploited as so-called ‘dancing’ bears, forced to perform on the streets after being taken from the wild as cubs. Years of malnutrition, improper housing, physical injuries, and constant stress often left deep scars, some visible, many hidden inside the body. Even after rescue, these internal health issues can remain undetected for years.

One of the most vulnerable organs in such cases is the liver. Responsible for digestion, detoxification, and metabolism, the liver plays a vital role in overall health. Unfortunately, liver damage often develops silently, without any obvious signs. By the time symptoms appear, the condition may already be serious. Recognising this challenge, Wildlife SOS veterinarians and researchers set out to better understand what healthy liver function looks like in rescued sloth bears, something that had rarely been studied before.
Understanding Health from the Inside
Wildlife SOS carried out a comprehensive study. Our team collected blood samples from the rehabilitated sloth bears at our centres. The motive was simple. They wanted to establish standardised health values, which can define what we can call ‘normal’ for sloth bears. Bile acids were one of the important markers analysed. The liver naturally produces bile acids, which aid in fat digestion. Crucially, they also serve as sensitive markers of liver health, frequently identifying issues long before symptoms manifest.
The outcomes were positive. When given the right diet, veterinary attention, and an environment where they can thrive, the majority of bears demonstrated stable liver function across all ages, demonstrating the amazing resilience of sloth bears. Their bodies demonstrated an amazing capacity to recover, regardless of the years of suffering. Subtle variations related to sex and age were also found in the study. Senior female bears had higher bile acid levels than males, and elderly bears also tended to have slightly greater blood protein levels. Similar to how human doctors use routine blood tests to monitor changes in human health over time, these findings give veterinarians useful reference points rather than being indicators of disease.

However, blood tests only provide a portion of the information. Veterinarians frequently use imaging techniques like ultrasound scans to fully comprehend internal health. The gallbladder, which stores bile produced by the liver, is crucial to digestion and can be examined by doctors using an ultrasound. In the past, chemical immobilisation or sedation for motionlessness was necessary to conduct such scans on wild animals. Even though sedating the animal is widely performed to prevent danger for veterinarians, there are risks associated with it, such as anaesthesia-related complications and extreme stress for the animal.
At Wildlife SOS, the veterinary team asked an important question: Is there a safer, more humane way?
The answer lay in operant conditioning, a training approach that uses positive reinforcement to encourage animals to voluntarily participate in procedures in exchange for rewards. Through patience and consistency, caregivers guided sloth bears to calmly position themselves during examinations. Instead of force or fear, bears are rewarded with their favourite foods or enrichment treats for cooperating. Over time, what once seemed impossible became routine.

What Trust Helped Reveal
Using this trust-based approach, Wildlife SOS veterinarians successfully conducted ultrasound examinations on 48 sloth bears, all without sedation. The findings provided new and important insights. About one in every four bears showed signs of gallbladder inflammation, a condition known as cholecystitis. A smaller number had gallbladder sludge, where bile thickens and settles inside the organ, and a few showed benign growths called polyps.
Although these conditions might sound alarming to people, what makes all the difference is early detection. With timely intervention, veterinarians can adjust the diet of the bears, administer proper medications and regularly monitor them to prevent complications. Since wild animals generally have the tendency to hide certain ailments, subtle signs go unnoticed until they are at the last stage. Hence, conducting stress-free ultrasounds helps highlight issues and aid in proper treatment.

The impact of this work does not remain confined inside our centres. This scientific research conducted at Wildlife SOS extends far and wide, providing vital knowledge about the health of this vulnerable species, thereby helping in their conservation and rehabilitation across India and beyond. By establishing reliable health benchmarks and demonstrating humane diagnostic techniques, Wildlife SOS is helping set new global standards for wildlife veterinary care.
Each day, as the sun sets over our rescue facilities, caregivers finish their final rounds, ensuring each bear is comfortable, safe and content.
